Waffles and Blue Sky

Day two.

Marty starts the day with the breakfast of champions... Eggos in a bowl with gobs of Aunt Jemima.

Marty connects with his inner Viking on a bluebird sunny day in the Oregon Cascades.

We're high above the fog here.

Peak 2 opened today. I was there for first tracks. The backside is short but sweet. It faces north, so the sun never hits it this time of year. It's right behind the ridge shown in the picture above, so all of the show from the prevailing southwesterly's ends up in this little valley. In 2006, there was a major blowdown between Northern Exposure and Junes run that opened up a lot of new lines on the 45-degree face. I liked it before--the slots were a lot hairier, so a lot less riders ventured in there.

I got three good runs in there today--it was knee-deep through the trees. Then a gang of groms ravaged it and it was all over. No complaints.

The bottom of June's Run with the Dragon's Back in the background.

Dylan throws a three, with Maiden Peak in the background.

Diane perseveres on Perseverance, with stunning views of Odell Lake in the background.

Waldo Lake to the North. Waldo is one of the purest freshwater bodies on the planet. It looks like the Forest Service will ban motorboats on the lake starting next year. This, after local boaters fought fiercely to continue the policy. Given there's plenty of other places to run your motor boat in the Cascades, it seemed like a no-brainer to me.

Marty does his best Rhino impression while Diane and Dylan critique.

That's it for the first weekend. I've got to catch up on end-of-term stuff tomorrow, but will do a little snowdance this week and hope that it comes down in buckets.

White Friday

Black Friday. What an appropriate day for opening day. I'm not much of a shopper, and I would never ever consider getting up at 4am to shop. To ski? Hell yea! To shop? never. At any rate, we turned Black Friday into White Friday.

The 2009-10 ski season is officially under way, therefore it's time to fire up the blog. Actually, I fired it up yesterday, but since that was a non-ski day it doesn't really count. We would have definitely skied on Thanksgiving, but the mountain was not open.

Happy skis and board on the rack. Yow.

The base is still a little thin. The good news was they opened the upper mountain, where all the fun stuff is.

That didn't slow us down. Dylan kickin' the pow on opening day through the baby trees and fog.

The best news was that it snowed instead of rained.

Enough of the pictures... let's go already.

Diane is rippin' it up.

Dave came along.

Diane and Dylan are happy campers at the end of a fun first day.

Here's to many more this season.

Well, whadda expect? This is Oregon. The base is a little thin. The weather dicey. The word on the street is that the average opening day for The Pass is December 6th. I'm not buying it; opening day has been more like December 20th for the past several years.

We'll go up and get our passes tomorrow, get a few runs in, and do the snow dance, give thanks to the start of a new season, and with any luck, the rest of the mountain will open soon.
